Environmental scientist, ships

Salary: AUD 58,392 per annum

We are looking to recruit an Environmental Scientist to assist with our growing ship navigation and mooring related work. The successful candidate will join the Ships team at HR Wallingford Pty Ltd and take a lead role in consultancy and research work. You must have experience of configuring ship navigation simulators, including preparation of environmental data and visual modelling, the running of navigation simulation sessions for port design and training on real time full bridge simulators. 

Excellent communication and client liaison skills are a must, underpinned by a strong technical background in environmental science or oceanography, ship navigation, ship mooring and port operations/logistics. The successful candidate will have a good scientific or engineering degree in a relevant subject and must have at least two years’ relevant experience, and at least a year’s experience of preparing ship navigation simulation databases and running navigation simulation sessions for port design and training using the HR Wallingford Ship Simulation System.

Main duties

  • Prepare and assess mathematical and hydrodynamic models and data of environmental conditions for use in ship navigation simulation.
  • Maintain and troubleshoot numerical models used in simulation.
  • Contribute to environmental impact assessments for a wide range of development projects.
  • Assist in proposing solutions to address negative environmental impact.
  • Modify and upgrade numerical models following feedback from clients.
  • Present numerical analysis of simulator configuration and report simulator sessions to clients.
  • Prepare/develop training in simulation programmes for mariners, to be undertaken in our Australia Ship Simulation Centre, Fremantle.
  • Liaise with clients and project teams to determine and mathematically model metocean conditions in designated simulation areas.
  • Specify and agree with clients environmental and other data to be used in simulations.
  • Support the day to day management of simulation studies at our Australia Ship Simulation Centre including preparation of the simulators for studies.

The successful candidate will be based at our Fremantle offices in Perth, Western Australia.
