GIS Analyst / Developer (Graduate level and above)

At HR Wallingford, we undertake a wide range of flood and water management projects . These include

  • Hydrological, hydrodynamic and coastal process modelling for rivers, drainage systems and coasts, 
  • Assessment of the impacts of extreme weather events on infrastructure and people, flood defence reliability, embankment breach, flood risk assessment and management portfolio optimisation, 
  • Natural flood management, sustainable drainage, climate change impact, adaptation and resilience, 
  • Satellite data applications, statistical modelling and numerical emulators for monitoring phenomena, improving our understanding of uncertainty in natural events and for forecasting.

Our team of GIS analysts and developers provide an broad range of specialist services to colleagues and clients. Activities include traditional GIS tasks as well as automation of GIS workflows, and development of software tools to support our work in the above areas. Typical projects include the development of tools to automate the creation, simulation and post-processing of hydraulic models, temporal and geospatial data management and analysis tools, optimisation and management frameworks, live data dashboards, web based services and modelling portals.

About you

We are looking for somebody with an inquiring mind who enjoys using GIS and spatial data to solve problems in the natural and built environment. This will require a strong theoretical knowledge of GIS fundamentals as well as a good amount of creativity. We are interested in candidates with some or many of the following attributes (or an aspiration to attain them):

  • A good degree in a relevant discipline e.g. GIS, civil/environmental engineering, computing or software engineering, geography or maths. A higher degree in GIS or a water related discipline would also be advantageous
  • Broad and very strong theoretical knowledge of GIS and geospatial data principles
  • Proficiency with GIS software (in particular, ArcGIS 10 / ArcGIS Pro, QGIS and FME) 
  • Experience in the manipulation of datasets commonly used in hydraulic modelling
  • Experience and confidence in data analysis and dealing with large volume data sets. This should include data modelling, relational database management and optimisation, SQL queries, working with multiple formats of scientific data
  • Experience in the design of efficient data translation and analysis workflows and the development of these using either ESRI model builder, FME (or equivalent) or with code 
  • GIS programming/customisation and/ or web-mapping/app development in an environmental science context
  • Technical knowledge and a strong interest in one of more of the following topics; coastal processes, hydrology, flood risk management, drainage, water resources, numerical modelling
  • Knowledge and interest in decision-making and optimisation methods for strategic planning
  • Good attention to detail, record keeping, presentation and report writing skills
  • Ability to work within a team to deliver a common goal.
