Principal / Senior Engineer (Equipment, Technology and Innovation)

Can you help us to make waves around the world? We have a fantastic opportunity for a Senior Engineer to join our team and help us drive forward our thriving wavemaker, equipment and technology business.

As a specialist water-focused consultancy, we build and test scale models to help us explore developments in the coastal and marine environments and our facilities are some of the largest in the world. To support this work, we develop specialist equipment, software and instrumentation for our engineers and scientists, and we also supply these to other facilities around the globe.

Our Equipment, Technology and Innovation group – a multi-disciplinary team of mechanical, electrical and software engineers focused on developing and suppling this equipment.

We are primarily looking for an electrical biased engineer, but are willing to consider a mechanical engineer who can demonstrate competency in electrical design and control systems.

Join us, and help us to develop and deliver our class-leading portfolio to international clients.

About the role

The role is multifaceted, with responsibility for delivering projects from concept through to delivery. You will take ownership of projects and manage them through all stages of the project lifecycle, including development of specifications and design solutions, procurement and commissioning. There will be opportunities for international travel, as you will be working at our clients’ sites to commission our equipment and train end users.

Innovation and customer focus are the keys to our success. You’ll work with the team on product development to allow us to continue to offer cutting edge technology, whilst also providing our clients with first class service.

We are proud of our reputation for quality, and we’ll expect you to work to our high standards, delivering projects on time and within budget. You will work directly with our suppliers and our clients, so we’d like you to demonstrate experience of working with both.

About you

We are looking for someone who is:

  • Technically inquisitive: you will help our team to innovate and deliver novel solutions for our clients.
  • Hands on: you will need a practical approach to help us resolve technical issues and meet deadlines.
  • A great communicator: you will be dealing with project teams and clients at all levels.
  • Flexible: you will be able to respond positively and adapt to changing priorities.

We would also like to see:

  • Proven project management experience: you will have at least five years’ experience of delivering electromechanical systems.
  • A degree level qualification: preferably in an electrical discipline, but would consider a mechanical degree if they can demonstrate post degree development of electrical engineering knowledge.
  • 2D & 3D drawing experience: preferably in AutoCAD or Engineering Base. Solidworks would be a bonus.
  • Good with numbers: you will need to perform engineering calculations to validate the design.
  • Language skills: excellent spoken and written English will be the minimum requirement. As we work all over the world, other languages would also be welcome.

While not essential, experience in the following technical areas would be a real bonus:

  • Electromechanical actuators
  • PLC, particularly EtherCAT based, control systems
  • MRP systems
