Water dam failure: space-based monitoring system gets the go-ahead for expansion

HR Wallingford will broaden our space-based dam monitoring system, DAMSAT, to include water dams in a bid to reduce the risk of failures. The UK Space Agency has extended our funding following a pilot project to monitor tailings dams used to store toxic mine waste in Peru. Ultimately the technology could be employed worldwide to reduce the risks to those living downstream of dams.  Continue reading ›

ARCboat widens its image

HR Wallingford has been working in collaboration with ITER Systems to trial its Bathyswath-2 swath sonar system on HR Wallingford’s remotely-controlled survey vessel, the ARCboat. The swath sonar - deployed on the ARCboat - allowed a wide area of the River Thames bathymetry to be mapped in a single pass, compiling a detailed picture of the morphology and depth profile of the river bed. Continue reading ›

Rigorous lab testing for Dawlish sea wall design

During the severe winter storm of February 2014, a section of the sea wall at Dawlish collapsed, destroying part of the main railway line to Devon and Cornwall. Government funding has been announced to upgrade the sea wall to provide better protection for the railway and residents. Arup, who are designing the new sea wall, have commissioned HR Wallingford to conduct physical modelling tests in the laboratory to verify the performance of the proposed design. Continue reading ›
