Peter Hunter

Peter focuses on the planning and engineering of major maritime civil engineering projects, including ports, canals, and flood protection barriers.

Job title: Technical Director

Professional background: BSc (Eng.) and a Diploma in Harbour and Coastal Engineering. I am a Fellow of the Institution of Civil Engineers and a Member of PIANC (the World Association for Waterborne Transport Infrastructure), representing the UK on its Maritime Commission.

When did you join HR Wallingford? In 2007.

How do you apply your knowledge? I have worked on concept designs for a future Thames Barrier and am the Lenders’ Supervisor on the new St Petersburg Flood Defence Barrier where I have overseen the whole project from design, procurement and construction, right through to its recent completion. I have also worked on the hydraulic design for the huge new locks on the Panama Canal, and have visited the project as an expert adviser. I am currently involved in the design of various big harbour projects for liquefied natural gas (LNG). In addition, I act as an expert witness on maritime topics.

What do you enjoy about your work? The variety of fascinating and challenging projects here at HR Wallingford, and the interesting people from different scientific and technical backgrounds who form the expert teams working on them.
