Job title: Principal Scientist.
Professional background: MSc in Water Resources Technology and Management, BSc in Geography. I am a chartered member of the Chartered Institution of Water and Environmental Management (MCIWEM), Chartered Water and Environment Manager (C.WEM), Chartered Scientist (CSci) and Chartered Environmentalist (CEnv).
When did you join HR Wallingford? I first joined HR Wallingford in 2002, then from 2007 I spent over a year in a research post at École Nationale des Ponts et Chaussées in Paris, before returning to HR Wallingford in 2009.
How do you apply your knowledge? I am HR Wallingford’s sector leader for freshwater environment studies and have worked on a broad range of projects from supporting the delivery of the Water Framework Directive (WFD) to assessing climate change, water resources and flood risk management issues. I am the secretariat for the European Commission’s working group on ecological status classification and have worked with regulators across the UK on developing methods for classification for fish, hydromorphology and hydrology.
I project managed the UK Climate Change Risk Assessment (CCRA) as well as several studies focused on climate change impacts on the natural environment. I have broad experience in the field of flood risk management, including flash flood processes, flood risk assessment and flooding and hydrology inputs for environmental impact assessments. I work on a range of projects in water resources management, including water quality assessments, analysis of hydrology and flows and development of ‘smart’ water management approaches for future Smart Cities.
What do you enjoy about your work? I enjoy the variety of projects that we get the opportunity to be involved with and the challenge to innovate and find clever solutions for our clients. It is great to work with colleagues who are internationally renowned experts within their field and the culture here is very open and friendly. I also really value the work environment; Howbery Park is a beautiful site on the banks of the River Thames.
