Brighton Marina Outer Harbour

Since 2008, we have supported Brighton Marina Company's plans to construct a major mixed use development within the outer harbour of Brighton Marina on the south coast of England.

HR Wallingford has completed tidal flow, wave and sediment transport modelling studies to inform the Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) for the Outer Harbour development at Brighton Marina. Our input in to the development of the scheme design development helped to minimise the effects on waves and tidal flows.

We peer reviewed the Environmental Statement to ensure it was appropriate for the marine licence applications, as there had been a number of changes to the design and construction methodology since the Environmental Statement was first produced.

We managed the marine licensing process for a number of applications for different phases of the works. By liaising with the Marine Management Organisation (MMO) at an early stage, we were able to ensure that the scope of the technical studies required to support the applications were proportionate to the scale of the works. We undertook marine noise assessments, Water Framework Directive Appraisals, Marine Conservation Zone assessments and Marine Plan assessments for each application.

We managed the requirements for public advertising of applications, and responded to questions and comments from the public through the MMO.

Having successfully obtained marine licences for a number of phases of the project, we worked with Brighton Marina Company and the MMO to discharge licence conditions. This required close liaison with the marine works contractor to provide detailed drawings and method statements for the works that were acceptable to the MMO.
