Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) Lead, Engineering

We are looking to recruit a skilled practitioner from an engineering or academic background as our CFD Lead in the Engineering Group to support our consultancy and research projects particularly in the marine renewables and hydraulics sectors worldwide.

HR Wallingford has been at the forefront of developing the use of CFD in coastal and maritime engineering for over a decade, and has a wealth of knowledge and experience in the subject for a suitable candidate to join and grow.

Our clients use our skills to help them consider and understand the marine environment at all stages of the project life cycle, from concept development and master planning through to design, construction and operation.

About the role

You will join our Engineering Group based in Wallingford (Oxfordshire, UK) and report directly to our Group Manager (GM).  You will apply your technical skill and knowledge in hydraulics and CFD to lead our CFD team on commercial hydraulics/ maritime engineering and research projects.  Depending on your attributes and experience the role will be at Technical Director or Principal Engineer level.  In particular you will:

  • Provide the technical lead on day to day activities relating CFD modelling
  • Manage a growing team of CFD modellers and hydraulic engineers
  • Manage or support multi-disciplinary projects with modelling applications (CFD, physical models, engineering design)
  • Be responsible for the successful technical and commercial delivery of CFD related projects ensuring that the quality and planning are met according to the clients expectations within budget and on time
  • Follow current trends in modelling science and provide input to HR Wallingford investment in staff, infrastructure and research to ensure that HR Wallingford remains at the forefront of CFD modelling applications for water related topics
  • Lead research activities relating to CFD modelling, and prepare research proposals for internal and external funding
  • Undertake overseas and national travel as and when required for business development and projects
  • Provide mentorship and coaching to enable staff to progress both their technical expertise and their professional development, supporting learning and development

Subject to your attributes and experience you will also:

  • Continue to publish conference and journal papers on CFD modelling aligned with HR Wallingford’s research strategy
  • Utilise your experience and established knowledge of the marine renewables or maritime markets to expand HR Wallingford’s CFD capability and strengthen our presence in these markets
  • Be instrumental in creating well-structured and commercially attractive proposal documents
  • Be successful in delivering new and existing strong client relationships in marine renewables or hydraulics matching our business plan and strategic goals
About you

You will have a background in Civil or other Engineering, with specialisation in water-related engineering applications (including hydraulics, coastal and marine engineering applications) and fluid structure interaction issues.  You will:

  • Hold at least an MSc and ideally a PhD with demonstrable track record in development and application of CFD models.
  • Have hands-on experience with OpenFOAM and other CFD software (e.g. ANSYS CFX) and significant simulation experience using High Performance Computing (HPC) environments
  • Have a strong background in some or all of the following disciplines:
    • Physics of Fluids (Fluid mechanics & fluid dynamics, two phase flow). 
    • Applied Mathematics (Solution of differential equations, linear algebra)
    • Software development skills relating to CFD models with emphasis on object oriented programming. Knowledge of programming in C++ within the OpenFOAM framework will be advantageous
  • Have a record of significant technical publications
  • Have excellent spoken and written presentation skills, in relation to presenting advanced and complex theoretical issues to non-expert audience
  • Have experience in mentoring more junior staff, including both engineering staff and MSc / PhD students

Subject to your attributes and experience you will also:

  • Have industry experience in marine renewables and or hydraulics, and the application of CFD modelling in these sectors
  • Have demonstrable understanding of key design issues of hydraulic, coastal and marine structures e.g.:
    • Hydraulic design of pumping stations, intake structures, drop shafts and open channel structures
    • Wave interaction with coastal structures (wave loading, transmission, overtopping)
    • Wave interaction with marine structures, including fixed and floating structures, with an emphasis on marine renewables
    • Be a senior professional with experience in project management of both consultancy and research projects. Some experience as a project director will be beneficial  
    • Hold professional membership of a recognised institution (e.g. ICE)
