Geospatial Software Developer -Floods & Water (Ref 2021_24)

We have a fantastic opportunity for the right individual to join our team of flood and water management experts, implementing novel software solutions to solve some of the world’s most pressing water-related problems. 

About the role

We are looking for a geospatial developer to join our Informatics team based within the Flood and Water Management Group at HR Wallingford. We have a reputation for delivering innovative solutions, both in the UK and internationally, in the fields of:

  • Natural flood management, sustainable drainage, climate change impact analysis and resilience
  • Satellite data applications, statistical modelling and numerical emulators
  • Hydrological and hydraulic modelling
  • Flood defence reliability, embankment breach, dam safety and flood risk assessments
  • Water resources simulation and investment modelling

You will support this research and consultancy work through:

  • Development of interactive web apps and software for modelling and data visualisation
  • Automation of geospatial data workflows
  • Analysis of large datasets
  • Contributing to technical documentation, user manuals and training
  • Contributing to the development of strategic expertise and marketing activities

About you

We are looking for people who enjoy the challenge of developing software and tools for the manipulation, modelling and analysis of scientific data. With a proactive approach and attention to detail you will work closely with project teams to deliver the best outcome for clients. You will have experience in:

  • Web development (HTML, CSS, JavaScript) including mapping libraries and frameworks (e.g. Leaflet, OpenLayers)
  • Scripting in Python or R for workflow automation and data analysis
  • Desktop GIS (e.g. QGIS, ArcGIS, FME)
  • Relational databases (e.g. PostgreSQL/PostGIS, ORACLE, SQL Server)

The following would be advantageous:

  • Previous experience in flood modelling and management, water resources or urban drainage
  • Experience in development of APIs
  • Desktop development in .Net or Java
  • Experience in decision making / optimisation methods for strategic planning
