As a specialist water-focused consultancy, we build and test scale models to help us explore developments in the coastal and marine environments and our facilities are some of the largest in the world. As part of this work, we have developed a range of specialist equipment, software and instrumentation. Our Equipment, Technology and Innovation group – a multi-disciplinary team of mechanical, electrical and software engineers – is focused on supplying this equipment to other facilities around the globe.

About the role

From concept through to delivery, you will support our project managers to deliver projects and assist them through all stages of the project lifecycle. Your main objectives will be to design and deploy the underlying electrical control systems that allow our software to accurately position mechanical components based on real time feedback from sensors.

The capabilities in this field are constantly evolving and we are a member of the EtherCAT Technology Group to ensure our systems are at the forefront of available technology. This knowledge is applied to both existing and new products developed at either our Head Office in Wallingford or regional office in Manchester.

Innovation and customer focus are the keys to our success. You’ll work as part of our team in product development to allow us to continue to offer cutting edge technology, whilst also providing our clients with first class service.

The position being offered is based in our Head Office in Wallingford.

About you

We are looking for someone with the following background and career interests:

  • Academic: you will currently be studying or have recently completed a degree level qualification in the field of Electronics, Mechatronics or Automation and Computer Systems - candidates of Electrical or Mechanical background will also be considered.
  • Control: real time control – our products are based on the EtherCAT protocol.
  • Systems: response of mechanical systems – our products can have up to 500 axes.
  • Sensors: measurement of real world parameters mainly associated with fluid applications.
  • Hands on: you will need a practical approach to help us resolve technical issues and meet deadlines.

The following skills and attributes are desirable but not essential:

  • Experience: you will be able to demonstrate industry experience (either sandwich year or post graduate) in a role that encompasses Mechatronics, Robotics or Computer Systems.
  • Software Programming: experience of Python, VB, C and/or Structured text PLC code would be advantageous.
  • Language skills: good spoken and written English will be the minimum requirement. As we work all over the world, other languages would also be welcome.
