Graduate / Post Graduate Engineer / Scientist (Coasts & Oceans) Ref: 2021_35

Do you want to contribute to exciting and innovative projects whilst working alongside technical specialists and industry experts? HR Wallingford is a world-leading research and consultancy organisation. From flooding to shipping, offshore energy to climate change, we advise clients worldwide how to manage the water environment. HR Wallingford has an international track record of achievement in applied coastal research and specialist consultancy. Our facilities include state of the art physical modelling laboratories, a full range of computational modelling tools and expert staff with world-renowned skills and experience.

About the role

The Coasts and Oceans team focuses on hydrodynamic modelling, nearshore sediment transport, morphology, and scour in marine and estuarine environments.

Due to the increased demands in our coastal, scour and seabed processes research and consultancy we have an opportunity for a graduate / postgraduate engineer or scientist to join the seabed processes team. You will provide support within the group to ensure the successful delivery of a range of commercial and research projects.

About you

We are looking for an individual with a good engineering or relevant scientific degree, possibly also with  a relevant postgraduate degree and some experience of working in a consultancy environment working on sediment transport related studies, although this is not essential. We are seeking an enthusiastic, conscientious and professional individual. The successful candidate will have strong communication skills,  a flexible attitude and excellent attention to detail.  The role will require a good team player with a positive attitude.

The ideal candidate will be working within a team that is internationally recognised as being world class in the analysis and modelling of scour processes particularly with regard to marine scour, so an ability to learn and be able to carry out scour studies in both small and large-scale experimental facilities as well as carrying out desk assessments of scour risk is essential. It would also be an advantage if the candidate has experience with Matlab/Python and possibly GIS and OpenFOAM, as well as experience of assessing scour development around structures. Involvement in a range of other coastal and seabed project assignments will be required from time to time.

Due to the nature of the role you will be expected to work in HR Wallingford's physical modelling laboratories based at our premises at Wallingford, Oxfordshire.  When not undertaking work in the physical modelling lab the company may be able to agree some days working from home (as per our hybrid policy which we are currently trialling).
