Learning & Development Manager (ref 2021_36)

HR Wallingford is a growing global civil engineering hydraulic consultancy business with projects, offices and representatives worldwide. We are looking for a dynamic individual to join our Operations Management team as an experienced Learning and Development Manager to build an innovative and world class L&D programme that is referenced by our staff and provides advantage in staff fulfilment and recruitment. 

This is an influential senior role working closely with the senior management team operating across the whole business (Consultancy, Research, Software, Equipment, Support Services, Howbery Park, Personnel) covering the full range of talent and skills required for the organisation’s long term success. The role

You will join our Operations Management team based in Wallingford (Oxfordshire, UK) with occasional travel to our site in Manchester and will report directly to the Operations Director. Designing both company and individual learning solutions aligned to our corporate strategy will be your primary goal. This is an autonomous role.

The main focus of the role will be: 

  • Evaluating L&D needs to ensure delivery of the organisation’s strategy and values. This will include management of the external training budget including developing effective approaches to encourage managers to invest staff time in both technical and non-technical learning.
  • Responsible for the timely design, implementation, successful delivery and evaluation of learning strategies and development programmes which build management and other specific skills and capabilities to increase the organisation effectiveness as well as to meet individuals learning needs. This includes direct engagement with staff and their line managers to provide early and effective career support to guide, promote and ensure their development.
  • You will build a culture where every individual feels they are learning and able to give of their best ensuring equal and inclusive opportunities for all.
  • The role works closely with various internal stakeholders to share information about L&D plans and initiatives, and capture training needs identified.
  • You will lead and develop effective programmes such as mentoring, apprenticeship and university sponsorship.
  • You will introduce and embed Equality, Diversity and Inclusion training and education initiatives promoting a positive culture across the organisation. and supporting staff networks
  • You will be able to turn strategic thinking into practicable deliveries and propose, implement, monitor and review training and development programmes of L&D activities across the organisation.
  • You will work with the MarComms team to develop organisational communications to ensure employees are aware of learning and development events and resources and will ensure compliance with mandatory training
About you

You will ideally be educated to Bachelor degree level and a chartered CIPD member with demonstrable post qualification experience of implementing L&D into an organisation. Being a “completer-finisher”, a team player and self-motivated with a can do attitude is a key requirement. Flexibly, an ability to work proactively, influence at senior level and excellent communication skills (both verbal and written) are also a must.

Ideally you would have experience of working with teams based overseas.
