Senior Dams Engineer - Flood & Water Management (Ref: 2021_06)

We provide thoughtful advice and guidance in all areas concerning the safety of dams and reservoirs: from inspections by qualified Panel Engineers and sediment management strategies to risk assessments for reservoirs and dams, early warning systems and flood mapping. We collaborate on some of the most nationally significant dams and reservoirs projects worldwide.

Are you looking for a new opportunity where you can really make a difference? Due to significant recent project wins and an exciting research programme, we are looking to recruit a Senior Dams Engineer to join our growing dams and reservoir business.  The successful candidate will join the Flood and Water Management Group at HR Wallingford and be a key player in our Dams Asset Management & Sediments (DAMS) Team of civil engineers, numerical modellers and software developers. 

About the role

You will have experience of working in the UK reservoir industry, a strong technical foundation in dams and reservoirs engineering, and awareness of related areas such as hydrology, geotechnics, flood control, hydropower, water supply, risk assessment and asset management. The role also provides the opportunity to get involved in, or even propose, innovative research and development projects to support this growing business area.

Duties will include bid writing, project management, and technical inputs relevant to your experience. We want to nurture and see you thrive in your career, and so will support progression to Supervising Engineers Panel, All Reservoirs Panel or towards a PhD if this is your ambition.

About you

The successful candidate will have:

  • A degree in civil engineering, hydrology or geotechnical engineering;
  • Experience of working in the UK reservoir industry
  • Chartered Status (CEng) with the Institution of Civil Engineers;
  • At least 5 years of professional experience related to dams and reservoirs;
  • Knowledge of the UK Reservoirs Act 1975 and key industry guidance documents;
  • Proven project management skills for studies, design or construction projects;
  • An inquisitive nature and interest in leading research and development projects related to dam safety;
  • Successful bid writing experience
  • Ability to work collaboratively with multi-disciplinary teams;
  • Excellent inter-personal and client liaison skills;
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills in English;

In addition, the following attributes would be desirable:

  • Openness to short term (<3 weeks) overseas travel;
  • Current appointment to the Supervising Engineers Panel, or desire and drive to become appointed;
  • Experience with programming languages such as Python or R
