Senior Engineer - Equipment, Technology & Innovation (Ref 2021_22)

As a specialist water-focused consultancy, we build and test scale models to help us explore developments in the coastal and marine environments and our facilities are some of the largest in the world. To support this work, we develop specialist equipment, software and instrumentation for our engineers and scientists, and we also supply these to other facilities around the globe.

Our Equipment, Technology and Innovation (ET&I) group – a multi-disciplinary team of mechanical, electrical and software engineers – is focused on developing and supplying this equipment.

We have a fantastic opportunity for a Senior Engineer to join our Manchester team and help us advance our product portfolio and drive forward our thriving marine equipment and technology business.

Join us, and help us to develop and deliver our class-leading portfolio to international clients.

About the role

Our high-quality instruments are used by the marine research facilities worldwide to measure forces and moments on vessels and marine structures; this includes the highly-regarded Kempf and Remmers (K&R) brand which was acquired back in 2019.

Innovation and customer focus are the keys to our success.  This role will play a key part in the development of our product range, building on the K&R brand and designs associated with towing carriages to offer cutting edge technology, whilst also providing our clients with first class service.  The successful candidate will be self-motivated as they will lead in the design, fabrication and installation of this equipment, working with other members of our design team to develop the solutions required by our clients.  This equipment is precision machinery, designed to order and you will need to be able to demonstrate at least 10 years of relevant design (mechanical) experience.  Further, at least 5 years’ Project Management experience (project values > £500,000) is highly desirable.

You will support the installation and maintenance of our equipment globally, so international travel will be required.

We are proud of our reputation for quality, and we’ll expect you to work to our high standards, delivering solutions on time and within budget, whilst maintaining a safe and clean working environment.  You may work directly with both our suppliers and our clients, so please provide evidence in your application of your experience of working with both.

  • Hands on: you will need a practical approach to help us resolve technical issues and meet deadlines.
  • A great communicator: you will need to be able to communicate design ideas and intent effectively with project teams and clients at all levels from around the world.
  • Flexible: you will be able to work across multiple projects, responding positively and adapt to potentially changing priorities.

We would also like to see:

  • A degree level qualification or higher: First Class or Upper Second Class in an engineering discipline.
  • Relevant experience: 10 years relevant engineering experience + 5 years project management. Able to demonstrate understanding of:
    • rotating machinery and bearing design;
    • design for manufacture;
    • geometric dimensioning and tolerancing;
    • material and component selection for aggressive environments;
    • developing inspection, testing, validation and acceptance plans.
  • Membership of a professional body: IMechE or equivalent
  • CE Machinery Directive: previous experience of application / assessment of the machinery directive.
  • SolidWorks: competent user able to create parts, assemblies and drawings as well as being able to review designs.
  • Technically competent: ability to perform calculations to justify design and confirm analysis results.
  • Language skills: excellent spoken and written English.  Also, as we work all over the world, other languages would be welcome.

While not essential, experience in the following technical area would be a real bonus:

  • EtherCAT based control systems or Ethernet networks
