Senior Engineer/Scientist, Ships

HR Wallingford is a world leader in simulating vessel navigation. The real-time simulators in our Ship Simulation Centres have been used in over 700 projects world-wide. We operate ten real-time navigation simulators in total, four at our UK Ship Simulation Centre in Wallingford and six at our Australia Ship Simulation Centre in Fremantle near Perth in Western Australia
Out of our Fremantle office we support Oil & Gas, Mining and Port operations by primarily providing ship navigation, mooring and environmental simulation services, which are used in port and marine terminal design, pilot and tug master training, and licencing, utilising our in-house specialist ship and tug navigation simulators. We also provide general engineering support in relation to all aspects of coastal / maritime projects and environmental impact assessments.
We are looking to recruit a Senior Engineer or Scientist to help deliver our growing ship navigation related work to join our growing Ships and Dredging team based in Fremantle, Western Australia and take an important role in consultancy and research work.
About the role
You will be involved in designing, planning and executing ship navigation simulation studies that often use our state-of-the-art ship and tug simulators. You will also undertake ship mooring studies that may use some of our extensive numerical and/or physical modelling facilities. Assisting with modelling highly realistic ship and tug manoeuvring models, you will work with our experienced, expert team of naval architects, engineers, master mariners, pilots and software modelling experts - all focused on our suite of real-time ship simulators. An important part of the role is your contribution to bids and proposals. You will also have the opportunity to be actively involved in innovative research and development to support this growing business area. As with all our roles we offer flexible working arrangements. About you
You will have a good engineering or scientific degree in a relevant subject and either a higher degree or a solid amount of professional experience in a relevant subject is needed. Proven experience of ship navigation/mooring and/or port operations/logistics project work is a prerequisite. You will enjoy working collaboratively with multi-disciplinary teams and will have excellent interpersonal and communication skills. Ideally you will have:
- A working knowledge of relevant national and international clients
- Experience of procuring and winning relevant work
- Skills in planning in the short and long-term, with the ability to manage changing priorities
- The ability to take the initiative, find solutions and proactively drive progress
- High levels of professional pride and attention to detail.
