We build and test scale models to help us explore developments on the coastal and marine environments and our head office facilities in Oxfordshire, UK, are some of the largest in the world. To support our projects, we have developed a range of specialist equipment, software and instrumentation for our engineers and scientists. We also supply these to other research facilities. About the role

At our Eccles facility in Manchester, UK, we design and manufacture precision measuring equipment used around the world by marine hydrodynamic research institutes. These range from simple force measuring devices through to complete facilities, and encompass a wide range of engineering disciplines.

We are looking for a Test & Commissioning Engineer to join our team. In this new role, you’ll work with our Electrical Design Engineer and help assemble, test and commission the equipment we build in our factory. From time to time you will also support to install and commission equipment at our customers’ sites, and train end users to effectively use and maintain their new devices. The role will involve assembly, wiring, checking, testing and commissioning AC drives and various other control and instrumentation systems. Fault finding is an integral part of this function as is the need to constantly monitor and maintain the quality of our design solutions. Our range of dynamometers and balances utilise a variety of technologies and undergo rigorous testing and calibration to ensure their performance meets our clients high demands, you will be an essential part of this process. The right candidate will hopefully evolve with the role to include defining test procedures, equipment design and software development.

About you

You may have a background in test engineering, academic research, instrumentation and electronics, but what’s essential for us is to find people with a positive and proactive approach. Theoretical and practical experience in electrical, electromechanical, electronic engineering is a fundamental requirement, and a sound theoretical understanding of the mechanics of motion, loads and forces would be helpful. You should also have experience of cable assembly and panel wiring. Ideally you will possess a HND or higher in electrical or control engineering and a physics GCSE or similar.

  • Technically inquisitive: Can you help us to deliver robust solutions for our customers, and resolve technical issues professionally, safely and swiftly to help us meet deadlines?
  • Hands on: Do you have a working knowledge of electrical systems? Can you read and understand electrical schematics? Can you check wiring, commission and test semi-complex AC drive systems? Do you understand and have experience with AC motors? Do you understand, use and configure HMIs and/or PLCs? What software skills do you possess?
  • Great communication: Do you enjoy working collaboratively with your colleagues in project teams? Eventually you’ll interact directly with our customers who are mostly scientists and engineers, would you be comfortable in those interactions? Great interpersonal skills are essential as is politeness, humility and open minded thinking, can you demonstrate the right professionalism under pressure?
  • Happy to travel: Are you happy to occasionally travel internationally for the installation, commissioning and training on our equipment at our customer sites (subject to COVID-19 travel and working advice)?
  • Flexible, resourceful and proactive: Can you respond positively and adapt to changing priorities? Can you work with or without supervision?
