How do you apply your knowledge? I develop forecasting and warning systems for clients internationally, using a range of tools and techniques. Much of my work has involved finding solutions to fluvial flood forecasting and warning problems, although the real time operation of drainage networks is an exciting new area of work. I have lead research into the use of techniques to improve the effectiveness of flood forecasting systems, and research to understand how to implement flood risk tools into operational situations. I have advised clients on the development of telemetry systems to effectively support operational modelling. My work has covered the UK and other European countries, the United States, Russia, Southern Africa, the Middle East, and East and South-East Asia.
What do you enjoy about your work? I enjoy using research to develop better solutions for clients, and working in multi-disciplinary teams towards a common goal.
