What do you enjoy most about working at HR Wallingford?
I was drawn to HR Wallingford’s purpose led approach and its focus on delivering solutions that support global sustainability. It’s motivating to work for an organisation where innovation is directly linked to real world environmental challenges, and where the work we do helps make a measurable difference. That sense of purpose makes coming into the office genuinely rewarding.
How does your team deliver impact?
We develop software products that help organisations improve how they plan, operate and manage their assets and services. Whether in government or industry, every organisation is looking to reduce costs, improve efficiency and make better use of data. Our tools are designed to meet clear user needs and deliver strong value, helping customers make more informed decisions and operate more effectively.
How does your division support HR Wallingford’s purpose?
Communities around the world are dealing with increasingly complex water challenges, from scarcity to flooding. Our role is to turn the organisation’s research and innovation into software products that help users understand and respond to these issues. By making advanced modelling, monitoring and analytical capability accessible through digital tools, we help clients manage water more sustainably and build resilience.
Our goal is simple: translate innovation into usable digital tools that help people make better, faster decisions about water.
What advice would you give to someone starting their career?
Digitalisation is accelerating rapidly, and geospatial data and technologies are becoming central to how environmental and societal challenges are addressed. Anyone entering the field should build strong digital skills: coding, data analysis, visualisation and an understanding of AI, including where it adds value and where it needs careful interpretation.
Equally important are communication and commercial skills. Everyone contributes to how an organisation delivers and explains value. Training in value proposition design, business development and negotiation is extremely useful for shaping your career early on.
A final word?
At HR Wallingford, we work closely with colleagues across engineering, science, data and research. Collaboration is central to how we operate, and it’s a great place for people who enjoy working across disciplines to turn ideas into practical, impactful solutions.
