St Kitts and Nevis Climate Risk Intelligence Data Infrastructure

The Caribbean islands of St Kitts and Nevis are at risk from hurricanes, with storm surges endangering coastal communities. HR Wallingford developed advanced storm surge models and a climate data portal, enhancing forecasting accuracy, data management, and emergency response for these extreme events.

St Kitts and Nevis face significant threats from hurricanes, with storm surges endangering coastal communities and infrastructure. The islands need a robust and accurate forecasting system to manage these risks and ensure timely evacuations and preparedness. The absence of a centralised climate data platform hampers effective decision-making and information sharing among stakeholders.

HR Wallingford led the development of the St Kitts and Nevis Climate Risk and Digital Infrastructure (SKN-CRID) to advance hurricane resilience through storm surge forecasting and a comprehensive climate data portal for effective data management and sharing. This addressed these challenges by developing advanced storm surge models and a climate data portal, enabling real-time data access and analysis. The initiative focussed on enhancing local capacity to predict and respond to hurricane impacts, safeguarding lives and promoting sustainable development. By integrating cutting-edge technology with local expertise, the project aimed to create a resilient and informed community ready for future climate threats.

We developed a sophisticated storm surge forecasting system and a climate data portal for St Kitts and Nevis as part of a project funded by the Green Climate Fund through the Caribbean Community Climate Change Center.

The storm surge models provide real-time forecasts by integrating advisories from the National Hurricane Centre, to enhance accuracy of predictions and support emergency response strategies. Simultaneously, we established a climate data portal to centralise data management, facilitating easy access and sharing among stakeholders. This portal serves as a hub for data-driven decision-making, improving communication and coordination during climate events. Our comprehensive communication strategy ensures that critical forecast data is promptly disseminated to the public and authorities. By focussing on capacity building and stakeholder engagement, the project not only addressed immediate vulnerabilities but also established a sustainable framework for ongoing climate risk management, aligning with regional resilience goals.

The SKN-CRID project significantly enhances hurricane surge forecasting and data management, offering economic, social, and environmental benefits. It protects infrastructure, supports proactive disaster management, and fortifies community safety. By fostering resilience and preparedness, the project aligns with global sustainability objectives, positioning St Kitts and Nevis as a leader in climate adaptation strategies.
