Pipeline river crossings in Azerbaijan and Georgia

HR Wallingford has been involved in a wide range of activities related to pipelines and rivers in the area between the Caspian and Black Sea in the countries of Azerbaijan and Georgia.

Geo-hazard assessment

We were part of a geo-hazard assessment team which carried out route assessment for a major pipeline. The work involved assessing the geo-hazards and engineering problems at potential river crossing reaches based on field visits to the potential locations.

Detailed design of pipeline river crossings

We carried out the river crossing design work for a major pipeline, including the specification of depth of burial and set back.
The work involved:

  • desk based assessments of crossings using mapping and satellite data
  • field assessments
  • detailed investigations of selected river crossings involving modelling and analysis of historical mapping and satellite data.

Advice on risk at river crossings at existing pipelines

We provided advice on the risk at river crossings for a number of pipelines. The work involved assessing all available data on river crossings. In addition, at locations where lateral or vertical movement of a river was threatening the integrity of the pipeline HR Wallingford advised on remedial works. The work involved field visits to the locations and, in some cases, was also supported by detailed modelling, calculations and analysis.
